Every vehicle is required to have some type of insurance on it. Once you have chosen the insurance company, you must decide what kind of insurance you wish to purchase. If you have no prior history with any insurance company, you will be given a standard rate. Insurance companies often set their rates for six-month periods. This rate will be lower once you establish a good driving record. However, it will go up if you are involved in any traffic accidents or receive any traffic tickets. The type of usage will affect the policy rate. Age and marital status also affect the rate. The amount of insurance that you buy for your car will depend on the value of the car, the approximate daily and weekly distance it will be driven, and the past driving record of the primary driver(s).
To find an insurance company you can do a search on the internet or look in the local telephone directory. There is a long list of insurance agents under the heading "Auto Insurance". It is also a good idea to ask a friend or relative if they know of a reliable agent, broker or insurance company. You should always talk to more than 1 agent or get more than 1 insurance rate quote. Ask for a printout of the rates they are quoting you. You can use this as a way to compare the quotes that you will get from other agents and companies.
Liability Insurance is the most basic type. You are required to have at a minimum liability insurance on your car, truck or van. (This is known as No Fault insurance coverage.) This type of insurance provides coverage if there is an accident. If death or injuries occur or someone's else's property is damaged, you may be held legally liable. If you do not have Liability Insurance and you are held responsible for the injuries, death, or damages resulting from an automobile accident, you may be sued (and you will have to pay this yourself). Liability insurance coverage is what may protect you from being sued. This type of insurance is not an option, it is required by most allstates. If you are stopped for a traffic violation and you do not have (at minimum) this type of insurance, you will be issued a ticket (the police may have the right to impound your vehicle) and you will have to appear in court.
Collision insurance: protects your car in case of collision with another car.
Comprehensive insurance: covers losses caused by natural disasters (such as storms), theft and vandalism.
NOTE: IF YOU ARE MAKING A CAR PAYMENT OR LEASING, YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO CARRY FULL COVERAGE (INSURANCE) ON THE VEHICLE. The insurance agent will cover this with you when you purchase your insurance coverage.
